Accommodation on the Isle of Iona
- Scotland
Hotels
The Argyll Hotel
The oldest hotel on Iona - it
has been in operation for over 140 years and looked after the likes of
Robert Louis Stevenson. The hotel overlooks the Sound of Iona and offers
splendid views across to Mull. It has a small garden to the front which is
an ideal spot for lunch or coffee after dinner. The hotel has a restaurant
and sources most of it's produce locally - vegetables come from their own
organic garden.
The Argyll
calls itself a "small family-run hotel" but, although all the staff are very
helpful and friendly, it is rare to see the owners - they certainly don't go
out of their way to make guests welcome. The standard of the restaurant's
food has gradually deteriorated over the past five years and although
acceptable it is no longer exceptional. When we first went to the hotel the
breakfast and dinner was something we looked forward to - but sadly those
days have gone. The hotel is a bit overpriced but still a good place to stay
when you visit Iona.

The Argyll Hotel
St Columba Hotel
The hotel is set roughly half way between
the pier and the Abbey so does not have such good views as the Argyll.
Though, to be fair, some rooms do have great views over the Sound and the
mountains of Mull! The hotel has it's own restaurant which sources products
locally and they have an organic garden for fresh vegetable. The hotel has
nicely laid out lawns which make a perfect suntrap for having afternoon tea.
Prices are very similar to the Argyll Hotel.
