The call of the corncrake is
the ionic sound of Iona - a sound that will live with you for ever.
If you are on Iona during
spring or summer you will probably hear the wonderful call of the
corncrake - if you are very, very, very lucky you might see one. They
are very shy, secretive birds and are normally well hidden in long
grasses. However, occasionally you may catch a glimpse of one amidst
shorter grass or even on a pathway.
The corncrake has a very
distinctive rasping 'crex crex' call - mostly heard at dusk and
during the night. The bird arrives on the island in mid-April and will
be gone by September. Interestingly, corncrake can have two broods in a
year - the first will fly off after about 34 days. They spend the winter
in South-East Africa.
