Iona: Details & pictures of the Isle of Iona

Must do things when you visit Iona . . .

View the tombstones at St. Oran's Cemetery (REILIG ODHRAIN)

Kenneth MacAlpin was buried in Reilig Orain in the mid-9th century, as were succeeding Scottish kings until Macbeth (d 1057) and traditionally kings of Ireland, Norway and France. None of the monuments of the kings remain in the cemetery but many tombstones of medieval clan chiefs survive. The cemetery is still in use and is the final resting place of John Smith - Leader of the Labour Party from July 1992 until his sudden death from a heart attack in May 1994. His epitaph reads, "An Honest Man's The Noblest Work of God".
