St. Oran's Chapel is a
beautiful little building nestled in the middle of Reilig Oran burial
ground - adjacent to the Abbey. It is believed to be the oldest building
on Iona and may date to the 11th century. This burial ground of Reilig
Oran has been in use since the time of St. Columba and was the burial
place for the Kings of Dalriada and Scotland (including Macbeth), for
many centuries. The Lords of the Isles were also buried here during the
13th, 14th and 15th centuries. Many of the wonderful tombstones from the
graveyard have been moved to the Abbey Museum to protect them from the
elements.
The chapel is always
peaceful. The only light coming from an eternal burning 'candle' and
from the open doorway. During summer there is sure to be a swallow's
nest in the beams. It is a great place for a silent prayer or to simply
spend a few minute in quiet meditation. After your visit to the chapel
take a stroll around the graveyard.
