Many people use the nunnery
grounds as a shortcut to the abbey and barely glance at the beautiful
old ruin.
Try to find time to look
around the building. Sit a while on one of the benches or ruined walls.
Absorb a thousand years of serenity that permeates the area. Take time
to relax and enjoy! Smell the flowers . . . read a book . . .
The nunnery was founded in
1203 by Raghnall mac Somhairle, with his sister Bethag as the first
prioress. It is mainly women of noble descent who took up in the
monastery. This monastery was one of the two Augustinian nuns
monasteries in Scotland; the other located in Perth.
In the Abbey museum of the nearby Iona Abbey, the top half of a
headstone of Anna MacLean, a prioress of the monastery of nuns who died
in 1543, is on display.
In 1923 the nunnery was partially restored and also in 1993.
